The state of Maharashtra looks to be in a bad state with the prolonged strike of university and college teaching and non-teaching staff. With all the events happening in the state I hope everyone realises that in the cat and mouse game everyone will loose something or the other at the end of the day. Of course politicians and members of parliament have nothing to loose as has always been the case.
They have always been the exceptional humans who being illiterate create obstacles for the literate and people involved in spreading literacy! When the central government shows no hesitation is sanctioning the 6th pay commission and increasing the salary of university lecturers and professors what does the state government of Maharashtra gain from posing as a hurdle? Their effort to distribute the money poured in by Dr. Manmohan Singh government into the pockets of school teachers and others looks like a very miserable idea to please and pacify all sections of the educational system in the state.
A lecturer at college or university level has to painstakingly give numerous exams to get an increment in the first place. On top of that they have to declare strike to obtain what is essentially theirs, not to mention that they will have to cope up with the time lost to complete their syllabus within the prescribed date. Students will have to attend extra classes and classes on holidays. While the entire country rejoices holiday periods Maharashtra will witness students folking to classes to make up for something born out of the logicless and undisciplined ideologies of the state government.
Isn’t it appropriate that the university staff gets paid better? If they are to be considered on par with school teachers then why are they required to give multiple exams and obtain higher qualifications? Is the trouble of obtaining a PhD worth it in such situations wherein the PhD holder has to beg and drag to get the rightful returns? This kind of atrocious behaviour from the people on chair can lead to tremendous amount of degradation in the educational standard. While intellectual teachers of the university might prefer to join private organisations n companies to save the trouble of strike and partake in the privileged increment scheme employed by the private sector, the educational system will be flooded with non-creative, incompetent and morose teachers who lack the capacity to pull their student audience and transport them into a magical world.
Is this the beginning of the end? Is this what leads to an intellectually dead civilization? Are we at the threshold of disaster of a different kind? Questions hang in mid air... unanswered.. indefinite!
